“Why did you write YUM?”
This is a question I hear all the time, so I thought I would share a clip from one of my talks where I shared a bit of my story.
When you watch the clip, you may want to laugh, because you will soon realize that the last thing I ever dreamt I would do in my lifetime would be to write a cookbook—let alone a book that would be the recipient of some of the world’s most prestigious awards in the world!
The realities of my life experiences and debilitation sent me into a dark and scary world that is familiar to far many. Being able to help others avoid having to live through the same challenges, as well as those who already have been struggling with similar challenges (their own, their child, or other loved ones), gave me courage and strength to carry my dream to fruition.
YUM is the manifestation of my vision to create the most comprehensive and delectable allergy-friendly recipe and resource book possible. I wanted this book to be the first of its kind to truly embrace the practical, psychological and social complexities of living with special dietary restrictions due to food sensitivities or special health conditions, as well as respecting food preferences that are guided by ethical concerns.
So, the darkest time of my life gave me the gift of profound insight and compassion about what it means to live with dietary restrictions due to food sensitivities. Because of this, I can now offer you and others the educational tool and deliciously empowering recipe collection that I wished I could have found decades ago.
